Port Stephens Surf School: An Image-Led Website for a 20-Year-Old Surf Brand

Port Stephens Surf School has taught people to surf at One Mile Beach, New South Wales, since 2003. Surfing Australia accredited, locally owned, 4.9 stars from more than 270 surfers. What it did not have was a website that looked like any of that.

The Challenge

The school does not sell one thing. It sells group lessons, kids' programs, private 1:1 coaching, the Twin Thrill package, Sea Sista day retreats, private tours with Luke Michalak, the High Performance Surf Academy, board and equipment hire, and gift cards.

All of that had to live on one site without becoming a menu nobody reads — and it had to work for four very different visitors: Sydney day-trippers two and a half hours away, Newcastle locals forty minutes away, families on holiday, and competitive juniors looking for coaching.

Our Approach

Editorial design, built on their own photography

We built the site around the school's own image library instead of stock: a full-bleed hero at One Mile Beach, oversized type, and a calm cream-and-black palette that lets the ocean do the colour work. Real lessons, real faces, real water. It is the fastest way to make a long-established local operator look like the best in the region — because they are.

One page per thing they sell

Three clear routes into the water on the homepage — lessons, retreats and wellbeing, private tours — then a page of its own for high performance coaching, rentals, reviews and gift cards. Each has its own story and its own call to action, so no single page has to do seven jobs at once. Returning customers find hire and gift cards immediately; first-timers get the beginner path without scrolling past things that do not apply to them.

Copy written for a place, not a keyword

Why this beach suits beginners. What is included in a lesson. Group ratios, accreditation and supplied gear. How far it is from Sydney and from Newcastle. These are the questions customers actually ask, answered in plain sentences — which happens to be exactly what search engines reward. Every page carries its own title, description and structured data.

Booking that takes minutes, not emails

Lessons are bookable online from a phone in a beach car park, with live availability, automatic confirmations, multi-day packages, gift cards and reminders — so the team spends its time coaching rather than answering "is Saturday free?".

The Result

  • A site that reads like a premium surf brand rather than a directory listing
  • A dedicated page for every experience the school sells
  • Online booking in under a minute on mobile
  • A clean content and SEO base to grow local search visibility on the NSW coast
