Stay West Algarve is the direct-booking website for two holiday villas in the quiet western corner of the Algarve, close to Burgau, Praia da Luz and Salema. It trades online as West Algarve Holidays at staywestalgarve.com, and we designed and built it as a holiday rental direct booking website: a place where guests can find the villas, understand the area and book with the owners directly instead of through a platform.
This case study covers how the site is structured, how the booking enquiry works, and the SEO decisions behind it.
The Brief
The owners let two very different properties in the Vila do Bispo municipality:
- Casa Onda, a renovated two-bedroom villa for up to four guests on a golf resort in Budens, with a shared heated pool and views over the course.
- Coastal Sanctuary Villa, a three-bedroom retreat for up to six guests in Barão de São Miguel, set in a private two-acre estate with fruit trees, countryside views and a large private pool.
The aim was a site of their own that could win bookings directly, give returning guests somewhere to come back to, and rank for the searches people make when planning a holiday on this stretch of coast. It needed to feel calm and premium, work well on a phone, and be honest about where the villas actually are.
Our Approach
Two villas, front and centre
The homepage leads with the offer in plain words: holiday villas in Burgau, Luz and Budens, booked direct. Two buttons follow, Book Direct and Explore Villas, and the villas themselves appear straight after a short introduction to the quieter side of the Algarve.
Each villa gets a card with its location, bedrooms, guest numbers and a short description, then its own page. With only two properties there is no need for search filters or a listings grid. A visitor can compare both in a single scroll and pick the one that suits their group.
Villa pages that answer the practical questions
Each villa page is built to answer what guests actually ask before booking. It sets out bedrooms, bathrooms and maximum guests, a photo gallery, highlights, a full amenities list (pool, air conditioning or fans, kitchen, Wi-Fi, parking, washing machine, linen and beach towels), house rules, check-in and check-out times, and a map.
Small details matter here. Casa Onda allows pets on request and Coastal Sanctuary does not. Coastal Sanctuary is typically available from June to mid-September, and the page says so, while still inviting enquiries outside that window. Saying this up front saves the owners from answering the same questions by email, and it saves guests from enquiring about something that will not work for them.
Each page ends by pointing to the other villa: "Need more space?" from Casa Onda and "Looking for something cosier?" from Coastal Sanctuary, so a guest whose group does not fit is not left at a dead end.
A booking flow built around a conversation
The booking flow is an enquiry rather than an instant-book calendar, which lets the owners speak to every guest before confirming. We made that enquiry as easy as possible:
- An Inquire About Your Stay form on every villa page, with name, email, phone, check-in and check-out date pickers, number of guests and a box for questions.
- A contact page with the same form plus a property selector, the booking email address and a WhatsApp number.
- A short FAQ explaining exactly what happens next: the owners confirm availability and send a secure payment link.
The cancellation policy, check-in times, pet rules and parking are answered on the same page, so guests know the terms before they commit. For a two-villa business this keeps things personal without leaving guests unsure how to book. If you are weighing up instant booking against enquiries, we compare the options in our guide to holiday rental websites that take direct bookings.
Village guides that tell the truth
The biggest SEO decision was what to do about location. People search for holiday rentals in Burgau and Praia da Luz far more than in Budens or Barão de São Miguel, but neither villa is in those villages, and the site should not pretend otherwise.
The answer was a set of village guides for Burgau, Praia da Luz, Budens and Salema. Each one is a genuinely useful page about the place: the beach and the water, parking, eating out, walking, how far it is from Lagos, Sagres and Faro airport, and who it suits. Each guide then explains where the villas sit in relation to the village. The Burgau guide says it directly: there is no villa inside Burgau village itself, and both houses are a short drive away.
That honesty is good for guests, and it is the right way to target a nearby place name without misleading anyone. Each village guide ends with its own short FAQ.
A surf and travel angle
The western Algarve is a surf destination, and the homepage reflects that with a section on nearby breaks, from Praia da Luz and Bordeira to Tonel at Sagres and Castelejo, with approximate drive times from the villas. A blog of longer guides covers surfing the west Algarve, family holidays, remote work and long stays, and where to stay near Burgau, Luz and Budens. These pages give the site something useful to rank for months before a guest is ready to choose dates.
Built for search from the start
Every page is served as real HTML with its own title, meta description and canonical tag, rather than an empty shell filled in by JavaScript. The villa pages carry structured data describing each property as a vacation rental, including its amenities, and the village guides carry FAQ and breadcrumb markup. The sitemap lists every villa page, village guide and blog post.
Design
The design uses large, bright photography of the villas and pools, a serif display face for headings and a clean sans-serif for text, with plenty of white space and a muted palette that lets the photos do the work. The site is in English, which suits the owners' guests, and it is fully responsive, because most holiday searching now happens on a phone.
What the Owners Got
- A direct-booking website for two villas, each with its own detailed page
- An enquiry flow with dates, guest numbers and a clear explanation of how booking and payment work
- Village guides for Burgau, Praia da Luz, Budens and Salema that target local searches honestly
- Surf, family and long-stay guides that bring in visitors who are still planning
- Vacation rental, FAQ and breadcrumb structured data, prerendered pages and a complete sitemap
We are not quoting booking numbers here. What the site gives the owners is a channel they control, where a returning guest or a recommendation can book without a platform taking a share. To see what that is worth for a single week, read our breakdown of Airbnb fees versus your own booking site.
Lessons for Any Holiday Rental Direct Booking Website
- Give each property a page that answers every practical question, including the ones that might put some guests off.
- Be honest about location. Write useful guides to the places people search for, and say clearly how far you are from them.
- Make the booking step obvious, whether it is instant booking or an enquiry, and explain what happens next.
- Write for people still planning. Guides to beaches, surf and family days bring in visitors long before they book.
- Build the SEO foundations in from day one, so every page can be found and understood.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a booking engine on my holiday rental website?
Not always. Instant booking suits larger portfolios and guests who want certainty straight away. For one or two properties, a well-designed enquiry form with dates and guest numbers, followed by a secure payment link, can work well and lets you speak to every guest first.
Can a direct booking website rank for nearby villages?
Yes, if the content is genuinely useful and honest. A good guide to a village, which explains clearly where your property is in relation to it, can rank for searches about that place without misleading anyone.
Should I stop using Airbnb or Booking.com once I have my own site?
Most owners keep the platforms for discovery and use their own site for returning guests, recommendations and people who find them through search. The aim is to rely on the platforms less, not to lose them overnight.
